Archbishop Rowan Williams in first visit to China

(Press Association)
This isn't that unprecedented! Robert Runcie visited China during the 1980s, when he was Archbishop of Canterbury. The same for George Carey during his time. That said, I am wondering why the service in Shanghai was "invitation-only" Regarding this visit, Rowan Williams has stated

"I very much welcome this opportunity to come alongside the Church in China, as well as to gain a fuller appreciation of China's remarkable development in recent years and its unique cultural heritage."

Hopefully this visit will be of some help to the Christian communities in China!
